It may seem overly pessimistic to assume a game would fail so early into its conception, but the truth is that it is extremely difficult to make a good game where Superman is the main character. In the end, the cancellation of any sort of Superman game is probably for the best. Some of the potential villains would have been familiar antagonists in Superman stories like Doomsday and Brainiac. This was supposedly titled Superman: Unbound, a name shared with an animated film from 2013. It's not clear whether or not this could lead to a potential Superman game afterwards but there's clearly a lot of interest in such a thing.The second possible title would have been less open-world and more like a traditional action game with levels to complete. Other heroes like Batman, Wonder Woman, and The Flash may also show up as antagonists if the title of the game is anything to go off of. Superman appears to be under some sort of mind control in the game and the likes of Harley Quinn and Deadshot must work together to bring down the superhero. The beloved DC hero will be making an appearance in Rocksteady's Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League where he'll be a villain. One can only hope that Warner Bros will see the potential in something like this and reach out to these developers to help develop a Superman game.

This was enough for WB to move away from the character in the gaming space indefinitely. While Returns wasn't as abysmal, it sits at a very underwhelming 51 on Metacritic. The character has been linked with massive gaming failures such as the infamous Superman 64 which is widely regarded as one of the worst games ever made. Superman's last proper video game was with Superman Returns in 2006, meaning two whole console generations have passed since then. The Man of Steel has had a pretty troubled history outside of his comics from cinematic bombs to lackluster games, it's safe to say WB doesn't really have any idea what to do with the character.
